About this experience
Taman Negara National Park in Pahang protects one of the oldest tropical rainforests on the planet, and this day trip takes you deep into it. The forest is home to Malayan tigers, Indian elephants and countless other species, though sightings of the larger animals are rare given how elusive they are. The centrepiece of the trip is the canopy walkway, a suspension bridge system suspended around 40 metres above the forest floor, giving you a rare view across the treetops from within the canopy itself.
Beyond the walkway, the day includes a wooden boat ride along Sungai Tembeling, navigating seven rapids en route, and a visit to an Orang Asli settlement where you can learn about the aboriginal community's traditions in hunting and gathering. It's a mix of physical activity and cultural insight, all set within a national park that's been left largely untouched.
The trip runs as a full day, starting early at 5:30am and returning by around 8pm, with transport, trekking and river travel all part of the 15-hour itinerary.
What to expect
The day begins early, at 5:30am, with transport heading toward Taman Negara National Park. Once inside the park, you'll trek through rainforest before reaching the canopy walkway, crossing suspended platforms roughly 40 metres above the ground with views out over the treetops. From there, the day continues with a wooden boat ride along Sungai Tembeling, passing through seven rapids on the way.
The final stop is a visit to an Orang Asli settlement, where the community shares insights into traditional hunting and gathering practices and daily life in the forest. The full experience runs around 15 hours, wrapping up by approximately 8pm, so it's worth pacing yourself and bringing supplies for a long day outdoors.
Things to note
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat or cap for the trek
- Bring a spare set of clothing and a towel in case you get wet during the boat ride
- Pack mosquito repellent, as this is dense rainforest terrain
- Not wheelchair or stroller accessible, and not recommended for those with back or heart conditions
- Alcohol, drugs, smoking and large luggage aren't permitted on the vehicle
- The trip starts early at 5:30am, so plan your morning accordingly
