About this experience

Rising before dawn, you'll be picked up from your Marrakech accommodation in a 4x4 and driven around 20 kilometres out to the launch site, where Moroccan tea, coffee and pastries are waiting while the crew prepares the balloon. Watching the inflation itself is part of the experience — a large-scale, hands-on process that unfolds right in front of you before you climb aboard.

Once airborne, you'll spend around an hour drifting over the plains and villages that surround Marrakech, with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop and the sunrise lighting up the landscape below. From this height, the layout of the perched villages and the contrast between the mountains and the flatter terrain become clear in a way you simply don't get from the ground. This hot air balloon ride offers a 360-degree panoramic view and takes off from a platform approved by Morocco's Civil Aviation authority.

Back on solid ground, pilots hand out flight certificates in a short ceremony before everyone sits down to a Berber breakfast under a traditional tent. Afterwards, a driver returns you to your hotel or another location in Marrakech.

What to expect

Your morning starts with a 4x4 pickup from your place of stay in Marrakech, followed by a drive of around 20 kilometres to the launch site. There, you're welcomed with Moroccan tea, coffee and pastries while meeting the pilot and crew, then you'll watch the balloon being inflated before a safety briefing takes place ahead of boarding.

The flight itself lasts about an hour, gliding over the Atlas Mountains' foothills and nearby villages as the sun rises. After landing, pilots hand out flight certificates in a small ceremony, followed by a traditional Berber breakfast in a caidal tent. A transfer then brings you back to your hotel or another spot in Marrakech.

Things to note

  • Pickup happens early, well before sunrise, so plan for a short night's sleep
  • Dress in layers — mornings in the Atlas Mountains foothills are cool before the sun rises
  • Wear closed, comfortable shoes suitable for standing in the balloon basket and walking on uneven ground
  • Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for once the sun comes up during the flight
  • A security briefing takes place before boarding — listen carefully as it covers safety in the basket
  • Bring your camera or phone charged, since the panoramic views are hard to capture in just a few shots
