About this experience

This 3-day overland journey connects Fes and Marrakech via the Sahara, tracing a route through the Middle Atlas cedar forests, the palm-lined Ziz Valley and the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. Along the way you'll pass through Ifran, Azrou, Midelt and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga, where a camel caravan takes you into the dunes to watch the sunset before settling into a heated desert camp for the night.

The second day moves through the Todgha Gorge and the Dades Valley, with stops at Berber villages and fortified kasbahs along the way, while the final day brings you to Ouarzazate and the UNESCO-listed village of Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass into Marrakech. It's a route that shows off the scale of Morocco's landscapes, from mountain passes over 7,500 feet to the flat, golden expanse of the Sahara.

Tent options range from shared standard camps to private luxury tents with ensuite bathrooms, so you can choose the level of comfort that suits your trip. Meals, camel treks and guided stops at each major site are built into the itinerary, making this a practical way to see the desert and the High Atlas without organising transport yourself.

What to expect

The trip begins with an early pickup in Fes, heading south through the Saiss Plain and into the Middle Atlas, with stops in Ifran and Azrou to spot Barbary apes before lunch in Midelt. The route continues past the Ziz Valley's palm groves to Erfoud and on to Merzouga, where a camel caravan carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, followed by dinner and live music at the desert camp.

Day two starts with a sunrise camel ride before heading to Tinghir, the Todgha Gorge and nearby Berber villages, then on toward the Dades Valley with a kasbah visit along the way. The final day covers Ouarzazate's Kasbah of Taourirt and Atlas Studios, lunch at Ait Ben Haddou, and the mountain crossing at Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, arriving in Marrakech after roughly three days on the road.

Things to note

  • Bring a passport or ID card, required for the journey
  • Desert nights can get cold, so pack warm layers even in the heated tents
  • Wear comfortable, closed shoes for walking around the gorge and kasbahs
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for exposed stretches in the desert and mountain passes
  • Pack light for the overnight stop, since space in the desert camp is limited
  • A scarf or bandana is useful for protecting against blowing sand around the dunes
