About this experience

Mount Toubkal rises to 4167 metres in the High Atlas Mountains, roughly two hours from Marrakech, and this two-day trek takes you to its summit with a licensed local guide, a mule team carrying gear, and a cook preparing meals along the way. It's one of the more accessible high-altitude summits in the region, but the trek still covers long hiking days and real elevation gain, making it a genuine physical challenge rather than a casual walk.

The route starts in Imlil, a village at 1740 metres that serves as the gateway to the Atlas Mountains, then climbs through the Ait Mizane Valley past the settlement of Aremd and the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch before reaching the Toubkal Refuge at 3207 metres for an overnight stay. Along the way you'll pass through Berber villages and mountain terrain that shifts from green valleys to rocky, exposed trail as you gain altitude.

This Marrakech hiking tour is built around one clear goal: standing on the summit at sunrise or shortly after, with views stretching across the High Atlas range. The second day involves a pre-dawn start, a demanding push to the top, and a long descent back through the refuge to Imlil, where transfer to Marrakech wraps up the trip.

What to expect

After transfer from Marrakech to Imlil at 1740 metres, the first day's hike leads through the Ait Mizane Valley, past Aremd village and the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, before climbing to the Toubkal Refuge at 3207 metres. This first stretch takes around 5-6 hours and ends with an overnight stay at the mountain refuge, where a cook prepares meals for the group.

Day two starts early for the summit push, a demanding 10-12 hour round trip to the top of Mount Toubkal at 4167 metres and back down. From the summit, the panorama takes in the High Atlas range and, on clear days, views extending toward the Sahara. After descending to the refuge and continuing on to Imlil, a final transfer returns you to Marrakech.

Things to note

  • Good physical fitness is needed as trekking hours run up to 10-12 hours on summit day
  • Pack proper hiking boots that are already broken in to avoid blisters on the long descent
  • Bring layers and rain gear, as mountain weather can change quickly at altitude
  • A sleeping bag is recommended for the overnight stay at the refuge
  • Mobile network coverage is limited or unavailable in the mountains
  • Altitude reaches 4167m, so allow time to pace yourself and acclimatise on the ascent
