About this experience

This 3-day tour takes you out of Marrakech and across the Atlas Mountains to some of Morocco's most historic cities. You'll pass through Casablanca to see the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, before continuing to Rabat to explore the Oudayas Kasbah, Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. From there, the route heads into the Middle Atlas Mountains toward Fez, home to a medina dating back to the 7th century.

The second day is spent in Fez, wandering the souks, palaces, mosques and Koranic schools of its old town, before travelling on through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Known for its blue-washed streets, this city offers a guided morning walk followed by free time to explore at your own pace. You'll spend a night in a traditional riad here, a change of pace from standard hotel stays.

By the third day, the journey turns back toward Marrakech, tracing the Rif and Middle Atlas Mountains once more with stops along the way for refreshments and rest. Throughout the trip you'll travel by vehicle with a local guide, staying in comfortable hotels for two nights, with meals and sightseeing built into each day's itinerary.

What to expect

Day one begins with departure from Marrakech and a drive across the Atlas Mountains, where you might spot baboon monkeys along the route. A stop in Casablanca lets you visit the Hassan II Mosque before lunch and the continued journey to Rabat, where you'll see the Oudayas Kasbah, Hassan Tower and Royal Palace in the afternoon. The day ends with a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains, arriving in Fez in the evening for your first hotel stay.

Day two opens with a guided tour of Fez's medina, souks and historic quarters, followed by lunch and a scenic drive through the Middle and Rif Atlas Mountains to Chefchaouen, arriving in the evening. A guided walk through the blue city on day three covers its main streets before lunch and the return drive to Marrakech through the Rif and Middle Atlas Mountains, arriving back in the evening.

Things to note

  • Pack comfortable shoes since each city involves walking through medinas and old town streets
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat as much of the tour involves time outdoors
  • Layer your clothing since temperatures can shift between the mountains and the coast
  • Carry a camera for the mountain crossings and the blue streets of Chefchaouen
  • Pack light for the two hotel nights, as luggage space in the vehicle may be limited
  • Expect long travel days between cities, so bring something to keep you occupied on the road
