About this experience

This day tour takes you from Inverness across to the Isle of Skye, one of Scotland's most dramatic corners of the Highlands. You'll travel by air-conditioned coach through Achnasheen and along the shores of Loch Carron before crossing onto the island, where the Cuillin Mountains and the Trotternish Peninsula reveal some of the region's best-known scenery.

On Skye, you'll stop at landmarks including the Old Man of Storr, the basalt sea cliffs of Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing, an area known for its jagged, tilted rock formations. There's also time in Portree, Skye's main town, where cafes, pubs and small shops line the harbour. On the return leg, you'll pause at Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, before driving back through Glen Shiel's mountain scenery to Inverness.

It's a long day out covering a lot of ground, giving you a broad introduction to the Highlands and Skye without needing to plan the route yourself. Photo stops are built in at each major landmark, including the castle viewpoint in the late afternoon.

What to expect

The day begins with pickup in Inverness and a coach journey west through Achnasheen and along Loch Carron before crossing onto the Isle of Skye. Once on the island, you'll head north across the Trotternish Peninsula, stopping at the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing, with the Cuillin Mountains visible across much of the drive. A break in Portree gives you time to grab lunch or browse the shops around the harbour.

In the late afternoon, the tour heads back toward Inverness, stopping at the shoreline opposite Eilean Donan Castle for photos. The final stretch passes through Glen Shiel, known for its steep mountain scenery, before arriving back in Inverness in the evening. Expect a long day on the road with multiple short stops rather than extended time at any single site.

Things to note

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as several stops involve walking on uneven ground
  • Bring a warm, waterproof layer since Highland weather can change quickly
  • Carry a camera or phone with storage space free for the numerous photo stops
  • Bring a passport or ID card for children
  • It's a full-day tour with a lot of coach travel, so bring snacks or water for the journey
  • Skye can be cooler and windier than Inverness, even in summer
