About this experience
Roro Jonggrang: Reincarnation of Love is a new dance-drama from the team behind Ramayana Ballet Purawisata, one of Yogyakarta's longest-running cultural performances. Staged in a semi open-air amphitheater within the Mandira Baruga cultural complex near Malioboro, the show retells the legend of Roro Jonggrang, the princess whose fateful bargain with Bandung Bondowoso ends with her turned to stone. It's the same myth tied to the Durga statue standing inside Prambanan Temple today.

The performance leans into the emotional core of the story, tracing the line between love and betrayal through Javanese classical choreography, traditional costumes, and a live gamelan orchestra. Watching it before or after visiting Prambanan Temple adds context you won't get from the temple alone, turning a well-known Yogyakarta landmark into a story with real emotional weight. A story pamphlet is provided so you can follow the plot as it unfolds on stage.

This cultural show runs on Sunday evenings from 19:30 to 20:30 WIB, with an optional Javanese buffet dinner available beforehand for those who want to extend the evening. Tickets are split between international and Indonesian citizen pricing.
What to expect
The evening opens with the option of a Javanese royal buffet dinner, served in a Joglo-style setting with live gamelan music playing in the background. Once seated in the amphitheater, the performance itself unfolds over roughly an hour, tracing Roro Jonggrang's story from her forced bargain with Bandung Bondowoso through to her transformation into stone, all set to a live gamelan score and told through expressive Javanese choreography and elaborate costumes.

A story pamphlet helps you follow the narrative as it moves between love, deception, and vengeance. After the final scene, performers stay for photos in full costume, giving you a chance to get a closer look at the makeup and traditional dress up close. The whole experience, from arrival to final bow, fits neatly into a single Sunday evening in Yogyakarta.
Things to note
- The show runs on Sunday evenings from 19:30 to 20:30 WIB, so plan your Yogyakarta itinerary around this fixed slot
- Wear comfortable, modest clothing suitable for an open-air venue
- Avoid flash photography and keep noise down out of respect for performers and other guests
- Arrive with time to spare if you're adding the buffet dinner beforehand
- Bring a light layer, as the venue is semi open-air and evening temperatures can be cooler
- Pair this with a Prambanan Temple visit to get more out of the Durga statue's backstory
