About this experience

David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) brings the work of one of contemporary art's most influential figures to Singapore, in collaboration with Lightroom London. Rather than displaying paintings on a wall, this immersive experience surrounds you with Hockney's work through large-scale projections, layered sound, and spatial design that traces his creative journey from early experiments with perspective to his more recent iPad paintings and digital experiments.

The show unfolds across six chapters, moving through vibrant iPad paintings, sweeping landscapes, and stage designs, all set to an original score by composer Nico Muhly. Instead of a conventional biography, the focus stays on how Hockney plays with scale, proximity, and attention, turning ordinary scenes into something worth looking at twice. It's a visual experience built around slowing down and noticing detail, texture, and colour the way Hockney does.

This immersive art experience runs at IMBA in Singapore, with tickets available for residents and non-residents. Expect a self-paced walk-through format where you move at your own speed through each projected chapter, making it easy to fit into a broader day of sightseeing or as a standalone evening out.

What to expect

You'll begin by stepping into a darkened space where projections wrap around the walls, drawing you into the first of six chapters exploring Hockney's creative process. As you move through the space at your own pace, the show shifts from early studies in perspective through to his vivid iPad paintings, sweeping landscapes, and stage design work, all layered with Nico Muhly's original score.

There's no fixed seating or route to follow, so you can linger on the moments that catch your eye and move on when you're ready. The experience is designed to be walked through slowly, with each chapter building on the last, culminating in a fuller picture of how Hockney has reshaped the way we look at colour, scale, and everyday scenes.

Things to note

  • Arrive a few minutes early to find a comfortable spot before the visuals begin
  • The space is dark for extended periods, so give your eyes time to adjust
  • Sound levels can be immersive and loud in parts, which may not suit young children
  • Wear comfortable shoes since the experience involves standing and walking through the space
  • Photography may be tempting but check on-site signage for any restrictions before taking photos
  • Check the specific opening hours for the day you plan to visit, as start and end times vary
