About this experience

This small-group tour takes you out of London for a day exploring Kent, a region long nicknamed the "Garden of England." The route covers two of the county's best-known landmarks: the historic city of Canterbury and the chalk cliffs at Dover, with a coastal detour into the seaside town of Deal thrown in between.

The day begins with a drive to Canterbury, where you'll have time to visit Canterbury Cathedral, parts of which date back to the 6th century, and wander the city's ancient walls and streets using a self-guided walking route. From there, the tour heads toward the coast, stopping in Deal, the spot where the first Roman invasion of Britain is said to have landed, for a chance to explore the high street and grab lunch by the sea. The final stretch follows the coastline past Dover Castle before arriving at the White Cliffs of Dover, where you'll have plenty of time to walk along the clifftops and take in the views before heading back to London.

What sets this tour apart is the pace: rather than rushing between photo stops, you get real time at each location, including a proper walk along the cliffs themselves rather than just a quick look from a viewpoint.

What to expect

After leaving London, the first stop is Canterbury, where you'll get an extended visit to Canterbury Cathedral and time to explore the city center and its ancient walls using a self-guided walking tour. From there, the route continues through the Kent countryside to Deal, a seaside town where the first Roman invasion of Britain landed over 2,000 years ago, giving you a chance to wander the high street and stop for lunch by the water.

In the afternoon, the tour follows the coast road past Dover Castle before reaching the White Cliffs of Dover. Here you'll have ample time to walk along the clifftops and take in the views over the Channel before boarding the coach back to London in the evening.

Things to note

  • Wear comfortable, flat shoes as the clifftop walk at Dover is on uneven, grassy terrain
  • Bring a jacket even in summer, as the coast at Dover can be windy
  • Pack sunscreen and a hat if visiting on a sunny day, since there's little shade along the cliffs
  • Bring cash or a card for lunch in Deal, as meals aren't included in the tour
  • Charge your camera or phone in advance for the clifftop views and cathedral interiors
  • The tour runs for most of the day, so bring water and any snacks you might want along the way
