About this experience
This punting tour sets off from a quieter stretch of the River Cam, away from the busier launch points in central Cambridge, giving you more time on the water and two extra sights along the route. A Cambridge student or local guide steers the punt and narrates as you pass beneath Silver Street Bridge, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, before reaching Darwin College with its riverside gardens and library.
The route continues past Queens' College and the Mathematical Bridge, built from straight timbers arranged to form a curve, then on toward King's College Chapel, known for its fan vault ceiling. Along The Backs you'll drift by Clare College, Trinity Hall, and Trinity College, once home to Newton and Byron, before finishing near St John's College and its Bridge of Sighs. Your guide fills the journey with details on student traditions and university life that go beyond what's written on the college plaques.
Blankets and umbrellas are provided for comfort, and audio and written guides are available in multiple languages including Chinese and Spanish. Choose between a shared tour, where you join other passengers, or a private punt for a more personal pace on the Cam.
What to expect
The tour begins away from Cambridge's busiest punt stations, boarding at a peaceful spot on the River Cam. Your guide, either a Cambridge student or a local with deep knowledge of the city, pushes off and steers past Darwin College and under Silver Street Bridge, pointing out details you'd likely miss on your own.
From there, the punt drifts past Queens' College, the Mathematical Bridge, and King's College Chapel, with stories about each landmark woven into the ride. The route continues along The Backs past Clare College, Trinity Hall, and Trinity College, ending near St John's College and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout, you're free to sit back, take photos, and ask your guide questions about student life and Cambridge history.
Things to note
- Dress for the weather — the punt is open to the elements, though blankets and umbrellas are provided
- Wear flat, non-slip shoes as boarding the punt requires some balance
- Sit low and keep movements steady to keep the punt stable
- Bring a camera for the college views along The Backs
- Choose the private tour if you'd prefer not to share the punt with other passengers
- Language guides are available for international visitors who prefer not to rely on spoken English commentary
