About this experience

Genting Highlands sits around 1,800 metres above sea level, a short drive from Kuala Lumpur and a world away from its heat and humidity. This day tour takes you up via the Awana Skyway cable car, one of the longer rides of its kind in Southeast Asia, with views over rainforest canopy and, on clear days, the Kuala Lumpur skyline stretching out below. Along the way, a stop at Chin Swee Caves Temple brings you face to face with a 15-metre statue of Guan Yin and detailed carvings set against the hillside.

At the summit, Genting Highlands opens up into what's often called the "City of Entertainment" — an integrated resort built around Malaysia's only land-based casino, alongside indoor and outdoor amusement parks, shopping malls and a wide spread of dining options. The cooler climate makes wandering between attractions genuinely comfortable, a contrast to the lowland tropical heat most visitors have just left behind.

The tour is available as a shared group experience or a private tour, so you can choose between a more social pace with fellow travelers or a schedule built around your own timing.

What to expect

Your day starts with hotel pickup in Kuala Lumpur, with complimentary transfers available for accommodations within 3km of the Petronas Twin Towers. The drive takes you toward Genting Highlands, where the first stop is Chin Swee Caves Temple, giving you time to take in its carvings and the towering Guan Yin statue before continuing on to the cable car station. Boarding the Awana Skyway, you'll rise above the jungle canopy toward the summit, with standard and glass-floored compartments offering different perspectives on the descent below.

Once at the top, the rest of the day is yours to shape. You can head straight for the casino floor, ride through the amusement parks, browse the shopping malls or simply enjoy a meal in the cooler mountain air. Whether you've booked the shared tour or a private one, the pace at the summit is largely self-guided, letting you spend as much or as little time at each attraction as you like before making your way back down.

Things to note

  • Bring a light jacket or sweater — temperatures at 1,800 metres are noticeably cooler than in Kuala Lumpur
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as getting around the hilltop resort and temple involves a fair amount of walking
  • Casino access typically requires guests to be properly dressed and of legal age, so check requirements before you go
  • Bring a valid form of ID, especially if you plan to visit the casino
  • Charge your phone in advance, as WhatsApp is commonly used to communicate tour and pickup details
  • Arrive at the pickup point with a few minutes to spare to avoid delaying the group's departure
