About this experience
Beneath Edinburgh's cobbled streets lies a 70-minute walk-through experience built around the city's grislier chapters. The Edinburgh Dungeon uses 11 live actor shows, theatrical sets and special effects to bring a thousand years of Scottish history to life, from accused witches to notorious criminals who once haunted the city.
You'll move through a series of immersive scenes rather than static displays. One moment you're in the Witch Pricker's interrogation chamber facing Agnes Finnie, tried for witchcraft in 1645. The next, you're creeping through the foul-smelling lair of Sawney Bean's family, stumbling on the remains of past travelers who didn't make it out. A drop ride is woven into the experience for a jolt of adrenaline between the actor-led scenes.
This is a theatrical, character-driven attraction rather than a straightforward museum tour, built around jump scares, dark humour and full-cast performances. It's one of Edinburgh's more unusual ways to get under the skin of the city's history.
What to expect
You'll start by descending underground into the first of several theatrical sets, where live actors guide you through scenes rather than leaving you to explore alone. Early on, you'll enter the Witch Pricker's interrogation chamber and come face to face with Agnes Finnie, accused of witchcraft in 1645. From there, the walk-through moves into darker, more atmospheric territory, including the foul-smelling lair of Sawney Bean's family, where 16th-century travelers met their end.
Throughout the 70-minute experience, the eleven live shows blend with special effects and full 360-degree sets to keep the story moving. Midway through, the pace shifts with a short but sharp drop ride, adding a physical thrill to the theatrical scares. The finale brings the various characters and storylines together before you re-emerge back into daylight.
Things to note
- The experience involves jump scares and close contact with actors, so it may not suit anyone easily startled
- Expect dim lighting and enclosed spaces throughout much of the walk-through
- The drop ride element means this may not be suitable for anyone with concerns about sudden drops
- Wear comfortable shoes as the experience involves walking and standing between scenes
- Off Peak and Peak entrance tickets are priced differently, so check timing before booking
- Arrive with time to spare, as entry is typically timed in groups
