Hadrian's Wall & Roman Britain Day Tour from Edinburgh

This full-day tour traces the old Roman Dere Street south from Edinburgh into the Scottish Borders, following a route that's carried travelers between Scotland and England for centuries. Along the way you'll pass rolling hills dotted with abbeys and villages before crossing into Northumberland, home to Hadrian's Wall, the Roman Empire's northern frontier.

The day's main stops bring 2,000 years of history into focus. In Jedburgh, you'll walk narrow streets to the ruins of a 12th-century Augustinian abbey. At Steel Rigg, you can walk beside Hadrian's Wall itself and take in the same isolation Roman soldiers once guarded against. Vindolanda, an excavated Roman fort, reveals everyday objects unearthed from the site, from leather shoes to jewellery and pottery, giving a close-up view of life on this remote edge of the empire.

On the return leg, the tour pauses in Moffat, a Victorian spa town once known for its mineral springs and now for its buttery toffee, before heading back through the Pentland Hills to Edinburgh. It's a day that mixes Scottish border history with Roman Britain's most famous monument, all without needing to plan the driving or route yourself.

The tour departs Edinburgh along the old Roman Dere Street, heading through the Scottish Borders to Jedburgh, where you'll walk through town to the ruined Augustinian Abbey.
