From Edinburgh: Outlander Adventure Day Tour with Entry

This full-day tour traces the real-life locations behind the Outlander TV series, starting from Edinburgh and looping through the Scottish countryside to five key filming sites. You'll stand at Midhope Castle, the exterior used for Jamie's home Lallybroch, before continuing to Blackness Castle, a fortress on the Firth of Forth nicknamed the 'ship that never sailed' for its stone-hulled shape. From there the route takes in Linlithgow Palace, doubling as Wentworth Prison and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and Doune Castle, known to fans as Castle Leoch.

What sets this tour apart from simply visiting the sites yourself is the storytelling woven between fiction and fact. At Doune Castle, an audio guide covers both its role in Outlander and its earlier fame as a Monty Python and the Holy Grail location, alongside genuine detail on 14th-century Scottish earl life. The day finishes at Culross, a 16th-century village on the Firth of Forth that stands in for the fictional town of Cranesmuir, where its unaltered streets, palace and herb garden give a real sense of life 400 years ago.

Travel is by road throughout, with a driver-guide narrating the journey between stops and passing Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument along the way. Lunch is taken at Linlithgow Palace, with time to try local food or picnic by the loch. The tour departs from and returns to Edinburgh, arriving back in the late afternoon.

The day begins with departure from Edinburgh, heading first to Midhope Castle, the real-life stand-in for Lallybroch, where you can walk the courtyard and sit on the steps used in the show. From there, the route continues to Blackness Castle to walk its ramparts and explore the fortress used as Jack Randall's headquarters, followed by Linlithgow Palace, where you'll break for lunch among the ruins overlooking the loch.
