About this experience

This night tour takes you to two of Chiang Mai's most significant temples once the daytime heat and crowds have faded. You'll start at Wat Umong, a forest temple dating back 700 years, known for the underground tunnels dug into its grounds and its quiet, tree-covered setting that feels especially atmospheric after sunset.

From there, the tour heads up the mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai's most recognisable landmarks. Its golden pagoda is lit up against the night sky, and you'll have the chance to listen to evening chanting performed by resident monks, a ritual that adds a reflective note to the visit. The mountaintop setting also opens up wide, panoramic views over Chiang Mai, its lights spread out below.

Moving between a centuries-old forest temple and a glowing hilltop pagoda, this evening itinerary covers both the historical and scenic sides of Chiang Mai in a single outing, timed to avoid the midday sun.

What to expect
The evening begins at Wat Umong, where you'll walk through the forest temple grounds and into its underground tunnels, built into the hillside centuries ago and lined with faded murals. The quiet, wooded setting feels noticeably different once the sun goes down, with far fewer visitors around than during the day.
Things to note
- Wear comfortable shoes as both temple grounds involve walking on uneven, natural terrain
- Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, as required at Thai temple sites
- Bring a light jacket, as it can feel cooler on the mountain in the evening
- Carry a flashlight or use your phone's torch for the dimmer, tree-covered paths at Wat Umong
- Keep noise to a minimum during the monk chanting ceremony out of respect
- Bring a camera for the illuminated pagoda and night views over the city
