About this experience
Amphawa's weekend market unfolds along a narrow canal in Samut Songkhram, where wooden shophouses that have stood for generations now house cafes, snack stalls, and small craft shops. This tour takes you out of Bangkok to experience a side of Thailand built around water rather than roads, where boats double as kitchens and canal-side platforms serve as dining rooms.
You'll wander the market at your own pace, watching vendors grill prawns, squid, and fish directly on boats moored along the canal. As the sky darkens, the tour shifts gears with a longtail boat ride along the river, where mangrove trees flicker with the light of thousands of fireflies. It's a quiet, striking contrast to the market's bustle just moments before.
The experience combines a heritage walk, a food-focused market visit, and a nighttime boat excursion into a single evening out from Bangkok. It suits anyone wanting to see traditional canal life and a natural spectacle that's hard to find elsewhere in the region.
What to expect
The day begins with the drive out from Bangkok to Amphawa, around 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Once there, you'll explore the market on foot, passing wooden shophouses turned into cafes and shops, and sampling seafood grilled right on canal boats as vendors call out from the water below.
Things to note
- Wear light, breathable clothing as Samut Songkhram is warm and humid year-round
- Bring cash in small denominations for food stalls and market vendors
- Insect repellent is worth packing for the evening firefly boat ride
- Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for walking on wooden canal-side platforms
- The boat ride happens after dark, so bring a light jacket if you feel the cooler night air
- Camera or phone with a good low-light setting will help capture the fireflies
