About this experience
This full-day tour combines two of Sicily's most striking landscapes: the volcanic slopes of Etna and the lava canyon carved by the Alcantara River. After pickup from meeting points in Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Catania, or Linguaglossa, you'll travel by SUV or minivan to the lava front left by the 2002 eruption, which destroyed the Piano Provenzana ski facilities and part of the Ragabo Pine Forest. From there, an easy 3km hike takes you from 1,665m to around 1,775m altitude, through birch trees to the Sartorius Craters, with views stretching toward Calabria and the Aeolian Islands.
Along the way, you'll put on a helmet and flashlight to explore the Grotta dei Ladroni, a lava flow tunnel partly carved by hand — a date of 1776 is engraved above its entrance, marking its past use as a snow storage cave. A stop at a local Etnean restaurant follows, with a first course, water, and coffee included. The tour then continues through Castiglione di Sicilia, one of Italy's officially recognised most beautiful villages, on the way to the Alcantara Gorges.
At the gorges, you'll descend via the municipal entrance, included in the price, to walk or swim in the cool waters of the Alcantara River as it cuts through ancient lava flows. It's a fitting contrast to the morning's volcanic terrain, and the tour returns to your original meeting point afterward. Tours run in English, Italian, French, or German, with private options available in each language.
What to expect
The day starts with pickup from your meeting point in Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Catania, or Linguaglossa, followed by an off-road drive up Etna's northern slope to the site of the 2002 eruption's lava front. From there, you'll hike an easy 3km route through the Ragabo Forest to the Sartorius Craters, passing birch trees and volcanic side craters before descending into the Grotta dei Ladroni, a lava tunnel you'll explore with a helmet and flashlight.
