About this experience

This speedboat tour covers three of the Andaman Sea's most photographed spots in a single day out from Phuket: Phi Phi Island, Maya Bay and Khai Island. Traveling by speedboat rather than a larger ferry means less time in transit and more time actually on the beaches and in the water, with the boat cutting between limestone karsts and sea cliffs that give this stretch of coastline its reputation.

The day is built around a mix of sightseeing and swimming. You'll cruise past Viking Cave, where birds' nests are still harvested from the cliff walls, and Monkey Beach, home to a resident troop of wild macaques, before reaching Maya Bay itself — the cove made famous by the film The Beach. Along the way there are dedicated snorkeling stops where you can jump straight off the boat into clear water to see sergeant major fish, sea anemones and, occasionally, blacktip reef sharks. The final stop at Khai Island offers a slower pace, with shallow sandbars, a stretch of beach for relaxing, and more fish visible right off the shore.

It's a long day on the water covering two provinces — Krabi and Phang Nga — so you'll get a genuinely varied look at this part of Thailand's coast rather than just one island.

What to expect

The day starts with hotel pickup from Phuket, with pickup zones covering Patong, Kata and Karon and other nearby areas, before heading to the pier to board the speedboat. From there, the boat runs between islands, stopping first for sightseeing at spots like Viking Cave and Monkey Beach before reaching Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay, where you can walk the beach and swim in the bay's clear water.

Snorkeling stops are worked in around the main islands, giving you time in the water to see reef fish and coral up close. The tour winds down at Khai Island, where the pace slows — shallow sandbars, a beach for relaxing, and calm water close to shore make it a natural last stop before the boat heads back to Phuket. Running from around 7:15am to 5:30pm, it's a full day out on the water.

Things to note

 • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses — you'll be exposed to sun for most of the day on open water
 • Wear swimwear under light clothing so you're ready for the snorkeling stops
 • Bring a dry bag or waterproof case for phones and cameras, as you'll be getting on and off the boat at each stop
 • Motion sickness tablets are worth packing if you're prone to seasickness, since it's a full day of speedboat travel
 • Pack a change of clothes and a towel for after swimming
 • Bring cash for any drinks or snacks purchased on the islands
