About this experience

The Pakerisan River winds through Tampaksiring past UNESCO-listed heritage sites, and this lazy river tubing route lets you drift along it at an easy pace rather than battle through rapids. Settled into an inflatable tube, you'll cover roughly 1.5 km over 60 to 90 minutes, moving through calm stretches with a handful of mild rapids mixed in to keep the ride from feeling too sleepy. The surrounding scenery does a lot of the work here — tropical rainforest crowds the riverbanks, and ancient carved stone structures appear along the route, a reminder of how central this river has long been to Balinese spiritual life.

A professional guide travels with each group, running through safety basics before you set off and staying close throughout. Everything practical is handled on-site: helmet, life jacket and tube are provided, along with a welcome drink, towel and access to shower and changing facilities. If you'd rather not deal with logistics, hotel pick-up and drop-off can be added at booking from Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak and Kuta.

It's a low-effort way to get out into Bali's countryside without needing any rafting experience, well suited to couples, families and anyone after a slower-paced river outing rather than an adrenaline hit.

What to expect

Your day starts with a welcome drink and a safety briefing, where guides fit you with a helmet and life jacket and explain how to handle the tube in the water. From there, it's a short walk to the river entry point in Tampaksiring, where you settle into your tube and begin the float downstream, guides accompanying the group the entire way.

Over the next 60 to 90 minutes, you'll cover about 1.5 km, drifting through calm sections and a few mild rapids while rainforest and centuries-old stone carvings pass by on either bank. Once you reach the end point, towels and shower facilities are on hand to clean up and change before heading back — either on your own or via the optional private transfer if you've booked hotel pick-up.

Things to note

  • Wear swimwear or clothes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes for afterwards
  • Water shoes or sandals with straps grip better on the riverbed than flip-flops
  • Bring a waterproof case if you want to carry a phone or camera on the tube
  • Pack sunscreen, as much of the route is exposed to direct sun
  • Bring extra cash for meals or snacks purchased on-site, which aren't included
  • Insurance coverage applies to ages 4 to 65, so check suitability for younger children or older travelers
