About this experience

In the hills of Taro, roughly an hour from South Bali's tourist hubs, Mason Elephant Park & Lodge is home to Bali's largest herd of Sumatran elephants. These rescued elephants, brought from deforested areas of Central and Southern Sumatra, now live in a lakeside jungle setting where you can watch them bathe, feed them by hand, and get close enough for photos. It's one of the more distinctive wildlife experiences on the island, built around direct contact with the animals rather than just observation from a distance.

Beyond the elephant encounters, the park's Museum houses an extensive collection of elephant memorabilia along with the only mammoth skeleton in Southeast Asia, giving some context on the animals' ancestry and history. The Park Arena hosts displays showing off elephant intelligence and behaviour, and at selected times you can watch the elephants painting. A 200-seat restaurant overlooking the lake serves an international menu, and there's a gift shop stocked with elephant-themed souvenirs if you want to take something home.

This full-day tour includes return transfers from your hotel and meals, so the logistics are handled from pickup to drop-off. It runs daily between 10am and 5pm, making it straightforward to slot into a Bali itinerary without needing to arrange your own transport up to Taro.

What to expect

Your day starts with hotel pickup, included as part of the package, for the drive up to Taro in Bali's central highlands. Once inside Mason Elephant Park, you'll move through the Reception and Information Centre before heading out to meet the elephants themselves — hand-feeding them, touching them, and taking photos as they move between the lake and open park grounds. Displays at the Park Arena show off the elephants' intelligence, and at certain times during the day you can watch them painting.

After time with the elephants, the Museum offers a quieter change of pace, with elephant memorabilia and the region's only mammoth skeleton on display. A meal is included at the 200-seat restaurant overlooking the lake, and there's time to browse the gift shop before your transfer back to your hotel. The full experience, including travel time to and from Taro, fills most of a day, running within the park's 10am to 5pm hours.

Things to note

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes, as you'll be outdoors for most of the day
  • Bring a rain jacket or umbrella, especially if visiting during Bali's rainy season between November and March
  • Age restrictions may apply for certain elephant activities, so check details at the time of booking
  • Let the operator know in advance about any accessibility needs so the visit can be adjusted
  • Apply sunscreen and bring a hat, as much of the park is in open, tropical sunlight
  • Confirm your hotel pickup point and time in advance, as transfers are included in the package
