About this experience

The Ayung River carves through some of Bali's most dramatic rainforest scenery, and rafting it remains one of the island's most popular ways to get outdoors near Ubud. This white-water rafting trip covers grade II to III rapids over roughly two hours, guiding you past steep gorges, jungle-covered banks and the occasional waterfall along the way.

Your rafting guide handles the technical side, walking you through safety instructions and paddling technique before you set off, then steering the raft through each stretch of rapids. Between the faster sections there's time to take in the surroundings, splash your fellow paddlers and enjoy the cooler air under the tree canopy. It's a hands-on adventure that works for first-timers and more experienced rafters alike, since the pace and intensity are shaped by the river itself rather than anything more extreme.

Based just outside Ubud, the experience runs as a half-day outing: registration and a welcome drink at the start, the rafting descent itself, then a shower and change facilities before a buffet lunch of local dishes. A photo corner along the route lets you buy pictures of the trip afterwards if you'd like a record of it.

What to expect

On arrival you're welcomed with a drink and complete registration before changing into rafting gear, with lockers provided free of charge. A guide is assigned to your group, leading you down to the starting point and fitting all safety equipment before the descent begins. Once on the river, the guide runs through paddling technique and safety instructions, then it's straight into the rapids, weaving through the gorge with plenty of opportunities to splash each other in the calmer stretches.

The rafting itself takes around two hours, finishing at a designated point downriver. Afterwards you can shower and change before sitting down to a buffet lunch featuring a variety of fresh, local Balinese dishes. Photos taken along the route are available to purchase at the photo corner if you want to remember the trip beyond the memory of it.

Things to note
- Wear shorts or a swimsuit and bring a spare change of clothes for after the rafting
- Sport shoes or sandals with ankle straps work better than flip-flops on wet rocks
- Bring sunscreen and a hat, as much of the trip is exposed to direct sun between rapids
- A dry bag is provided for cameras and phones, though hiring the on-site photographer is a safer option for capturing photos
- Bring extra cash for drinks or to purchase photos at the photo corner
- This ticket does not include transport, so factor in how you'll reach the starting point near Ubud
